ICELA organizes seminar on forest fires in connection with world environment day

Jammu, June 5: Indian Council for Enviro-Legal Action (ICELA) in collaboration with Interaction Forum Jammu Province (IFJP) and All J&K Youth Federation (AJKYF) organized a seminar on 'Forest Fires its Cause and remedies' on World Environment Day.
The programme was presided over by Convener ICELA J&K Chapter Ashok Sharma Advocate where as B S Jamwal former Deputy Commissioner and Chairman IFJP was the chief guest. Chander Mohan Sharma former Deputy Director Agriculture and Dr. Y P Sawhney former MD Milk Federation were the guests of honour and Ex-Additional PCCF Captain L K Sharma was the special guest invitee. The participants expressed deep concern on the widespread forest fires which have caused tremendous damage to the forest vegetation and wild life. The participants expressed their views on forest fires, causes and remedies.
Arjun Sharma, State Convener AJKYF said that the department and the local residents cannot be mute spectators towards destruction of green gold due to fire incidents.
BC Raina former trade unionist, Chairman RTI Cell, IFJP described the forests as full-fledged institution which has its own ecosystem, hydraulic cycle, food chain, micro climate and bio diversity status and forest fires damage all components of this institution of nature.
Dr. Sawhney said that state's pastoral economy is directly connected with the forests and the forest fires have direct bearing on the rural economy.
Sharma, a agriculture technocrat said that forest fires destroy the soil microorganism, soil profile, top fertile layers and water retentive potentiality of the forest soils besides damaging the forest regeneration. Jamwal emphasized upon the preventive measures on fire protection in terms of slash burning, maintenance of forest lines extraction of fire towers and deployment of fire watchers. Captain Sharma emphasized upon a proper 'Forest Fires Policy' for the state.
State Convener, ICELA in his presidential address said that the loss in forest fires cannot be recouped which is loss of a common man. He deplored the unconcerned attitude of the government in safe guarding the national property. He said that the forest fires have enhanced the air temperature by 4 to 5 degrees besides polluting the soil and air.
