Students suffer for want of cooling facilities in schools
6/7/2018 11:09:07 PM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 7: Amid scorching heat, students studying in government and private schools are facing tough times as majority of schools are lacking basic facilities, like fans and coolers to resist to fight the heat.
With temperature in Srinagar touching around 35 degree Celsius, the students pray for vacations.
Insiders in the Education Department said around 80-percent schools across the Valley sans coolers and fans. They said these schools are not well equipped to resist hot weather and respite the children from the intense heat.
"We are receiving complaints from teachers that around 10 percent students are not coming to schools due to lack of cooling arrangements," an official of Education Department said, wishing anonymity.
According to the guidelines set by the Supreme Court, proper arrangements of heating and cooling should be put in place in schools so that students won't suffer.
The government had earlier also directed the owners of coaching centres to make all adequate arrangements or they would take action against the violators. But no one seems bothered over the ill-adequate facilities in schools and put the lives of children at risk.
A senior official of Education Department said that lack of cooling arrangements in schools has a huge impact on the health and performance of students.
"It brings immense inconvenience to the students when studying in class rooms without any cooling arrangements. Small children are the worst affected and many fall unconscious due to scorching heat. They feel physically uncomforted and lead to mental stress on the students. I visited a school where a small girl complained that her heart was beating fast due to intense heat and her body was sweating," he said.
He said authorities have to find a way out how to tackle the situation. "
Due to scorching heat, parents are also worried over the safety of their children as they complain that lack of cooling arrangements has made lives of their children hell.
"In absence of any required facilities against the hot weather, my 10-year-daughter fell unconscious in the school. There is no provision of fans and coolers in his school, which is very inconvenient for the children," said Mohammad Ashraf. Parents have demanded cooling facilities in schools.
