Rains create havoc in Kishtwar; woman dies

Kishtwar, June 29: A 24-year-old nomadic woman died while her minor daughter got injured after a tree fell on their temporary shelter at Kishtwar's tourist resort Kalamsatar.
As per details available with Early Times, the incident took place at around 8 am Friday when a huge tree got uprooted due to heavy rainfall in the district for the last over 48 hours. Jameela Begum, wife of Mohammad Sharief, a resident of Bajalta, Jammu, died in the accident while her minor daughter Nazia Kousar got injured and was shifted to district hospital Kishtwar where she is undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, rain water created havoc in different parts of Kishtwar as several roads were washed away while the river Chenab was flowing near the danger mark at Pul Doda. Due to heavy flesh floods the under construction 48 MW lower Kalnai power project suffered massive damage while three vehicles including JCB, Damper and a tipper were also washed away in the flesh floods. There was no loss of life. The work on the 48 MW Lower Kalnai power project in Dunadi area of Kishtwar has been suspended due to delay in handing over of the acquired land to the construction company.
Similarly Kishtwar-Sirgwari-Srawan raod also suffered damages due to heavy rains near Sirgwari village. Beside, Kishtwar-Rakna Ziyarat Sharief (Palmar) road also suffered damages. The people informed the Early Times that rain water along with mudslide is entering into their homes. The traffic on Kishtwar-Doda-Jammu National Highway also remained affected due to landslides at various places all along 110 km Kishtwar-Batote stretch of the highway. Keeping in view of heavy rainfall, both district administration Kishtwar and Doda decided to close the schools. Several lanes and drains in Kishtwar town and its vicinity areas remains chocked and due to damaged drains, the water entered into the houses situated on either side of Malipath to New DC Office complex road. The authorities had already sounded alert and have asked officials to remain alert and monitor the situation on hourly basis. No report of any untoward incident has been received from any part of the Kishtwar.
