Mehbooba leaves official accommodation in New Delhi
7/10/2018 11:05:31 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, July 10: Within a fortnight of being served a notice to leave her official residence in the national capital, former chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti has left the place along with her personal belongings.
Sources said the Mehbooba last week shifted her belongings to a "plush but private apartment" in New Delhi. "Shifting from her official residence into private apartment was the main reason why it took her time camping in the national capital but unfortunately many mistook that sitting back in New Delhi she was lobbying for a new alliance in the state," said a senior PDP leader from south Kashmir on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said Mehbooba was helped by her other family members and close aides to collect her belongings. 5 Akbar Road in the plush capital happens to be the official residence of the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
Two weeks back Early Times had reported that Mehbooba was asked to vacate the accommodation.
The notice, as per insiders, had come as a shocker for Mehbooba who was not expecting that be served with such a diktat within days of her government had collapsed. Insiders said Mehbooba loved the official accommodation at the Akbar Road. After taking over as the Chief Minister in 2016, though she was initially given an accommodation at Prithvi Raj Road, Mehbooba had worked hard to get the Akbar Road villa, which was then occupied for Payal Abdullah, the estranged wife of former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. In July that year, the Jammu and Kashmir government had asked Delhi High Court to evict Payal Abdullah because the then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti wanted to live in the house in Lutyens' Delhi. Omar Abdullah was allotted the VIII category house by the Ministry of Urban Development, when he was MoS for Commerce and Industry. In an affidavit, the then Mehbooba government had told HC that it does not have a proper residence to house its Chief Minister as her security is imperative in times when violence and riots have broken out all over the state. But after the sudden demise of her alliance, Mehbooba had to finally leave her "favorite place" in New Delhi.
Despite repeated attempts Mehbooba could not be contacted for comments.
