| Jammu receives 57 millimeters of rain in 40 hours | | Meteorological department asks people not to panic as there is no forecast of heavy rains | | Jehangir Rashid

SRINAGAR, July 21: Meteorological (MeT) Department today settled the nerves of the people living in the state by dispelling rumours that Jammu & Kashmir would be lashed by widespread rains from July 23 to July 27.
A press release issued by the department here said that there is no truth in the rumours that a forecast of heavy rainfall has been given by the department. The department said that the people should not get panicky since there is no truth in such rumours.
"Since from past few days a false rumour and panic has been created by the section of print and electronic media among the people that forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall has been given by the Meteorological department. As of now, no such kind of forecast was issued by the department," reads the press release issued by Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad (Scientist-B).
The press release issued on behalf of Director MeT department Sonam Lotus has said that since monsoon is active over North India, light to moderate rains over fairly widespread places can't be ruled out during July 22 and 23.
"There is a possibility of development of low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal, likely in west-northwestward movement and another low pressure area over North Madhya Pradesh & neighbourhood," reads the press release. The press release says that under the influence of this system, fairly widespread rainfall with heavy falls at isolated places over Jammu division, moderate rainfall in Kashmir division and light rainfall in Ladakh division is most likely to occur during the July 22 and 23.
In the meantime, a spokesman of the department said that Jammu received around 57 millimeters of rain during the past 40 hours. The maximum temperature in the winter capital of the state on July 21 was recorded as 33.3 degrees Celsius with the minimum temperature being recorded as 26.9 degrees Celsius.
The spokesman said that Srinagar recorded the maximum temperature of 32.1 degrees Celsius with the minimum temperature being recorded as 20.4 degrees Celsius. Among the stations in Kashmir, Kupwara turned out to be hottest with the mercury settling at 32.7 degrees Celsius and the Gulmarg coolest at 21 degrees Celsius.
The spokesman said that warning of isolated heavy rainfall has been given for Jammu for July 23 and 24 adding that such a warning has also been issued for one day (July 22) for the Kashmir valley. The spokesman said that light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at most places in the state.
It would be in place to mention here that the MeT department had in 2014 forecast that Jammu & Kashmir especially the valley would witness a long spell of heavy rains. The department had asked the people at helm to gear up since there was a likelihood of a flood and same happened with the then state government caught napping. |
