Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 21: On June 19, the BJP high command snapped ties with PDP president and J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti. As a result, the PDP-BJP coalition collapsed. The Mehbooba Mufti's government fell the same day. While snapping ties with her, the BJP high command advanced many arguments in support of its decision to end ties with the PDP. Two of the arguments were: She had failed to meet the needs and urges of the people of Jammu and Ladakh and that her government had failed to tackle the menace of terrorism. These arguments constituted a sort of a big U-turn in the sense that the BJP leaders in the state and at the Centre had always defended Mehbooba Mufti's policies and repeatedly claimed that the PDP-BJP government had done justice to the people of Jammu and Ladakh and that it was for the first time after the state's accession with India that Jammu and Ladakh got a fair dispensation.
However, the withdrawal of support to the PDP by the BJP was considered by many a significant change in its policy towards J&K. The general view was that the BJP would return to those old days when it used to criticize the state's special status and demand the state's complete integration into India. It would also denounce those in Kashmir, including separatists and pro-autonomy NC and pro-self-rule PDP, who would say day in and day out that Kashmir was a political problem and elections to the assembly didn't mean that there was no Kashmir issue and that governments in the state were formed only to cater to the basic needs of the people.
But on July 19, the J&K BJP president Ravinder Raina made a big policy statement that vindicated the Kashmiri leaders of all hues, who at no point in time took electoral exercises in J&K to mean that J&K was a settled issue. He, in fact, spoke their language and polls in the state were not meant for political solution of Kashmir issue but for the basic amenities to the people.
"Elections aren't meant for the political solution of Kashmir issue but polls are meant only to ensure basic facilities including Sadak, Bijli and Pani to the people. The BJP is ready to go for any polls in the State," J&K BJP chief Ravinder Raina was quoted as saying.
The BJP has to explain the reasons behind this major policy statement as it can be used by the separatists in Kashmir at national and international to hurt the nation's interest in the state and embarrass the Narendra Modi government.
