Now NC 'divided' over former JNU leader's entry into party folds
7/21/2018 11:05:41 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, July 21: While rumor mills are rife that a former JNU leader, who has been close to the National Conference, may formally join the party soon, her prospective entry has left the NC divided. Sources said some of the leaders are unhappy with her getting formal space in the party fold though the Abdullahs have been supporting her for long. Sources said a group of leaders feel that she was not fit to be a "political icon" for the NC as "her activism at the JNU was not in accordance with the ideology of the party founded by Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah."
Sources said some of the leaders have been avoiding discussions on her prospective entry into the party, though the NC has already started giving her "ground support." A senior journalist had recently made a tweet that the former JNU leader would join the NC. But the other party didn't refute the social media buzz, hinting that something was cooking up. Some of the senior leaders are likely to call on NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah and acting president Omar Abdullah to ask him what position would she be given in the party.
Sources said before announcing her entry into the party, the Abdullahs want her "tour various areas of the state to get connected to the youth at the grassroots." Sources claimed that while the former JNU leader has agreed to the plans, some in the party leadership are not that convinced.
"She has been projecting herself on different lines which do not match with the party batting for autonomy. Instead of taking an emotional decision that party leadership should look into the pros and cons of such a deal," said a NC leader on the condition of anonymity.
While the Peoples Democratic Party was also looking ahead to embrace her, woman leader is understood to have shown inclination towards the National Conference. The things about her affiliation to regional politics got clear when a few months ago, she attended a youth event hosted by the NC at a five star hotel in Srinagar.
"Since that day we gave up the idea of asking her to join us," said a PDP leader on the condition of anonymity. Sources said the family of the young woman leader is traditionally a supporter of the NC and that her parents are also convinced with the decision. Despite repeated attempts the youth leader couldn't be contacted for comments.
