Re-organise state to hold elections in Jammu, Ladakh
Kashmir troubles

Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 22: Opinion in Jammu is changing and changing very fast. Many concerned citizens are expressing the view that Kashmir has been a trouble-spot since decades and Jammu and Ladakh suffer for the Kashmir troubles. This is not acceptable, they are saying, adding that there is the need to reorganize the state so that the people of each of the three regions become a master in their own house and manage their own affairs themselves in a meaningful manner.
"Jammu and Ladakh, which constitute 89 per cent of the state's land area and which are inhabited by over 50 per cent of the state's population, consistently suffer for the Kashmir trouble. Both these regions are peaceful and have nothing to do with the ongoing azadi struggle in Kashmir. The state remained under Governor/President rule between January 1990 and October 1996 not because of troubles in Jammu and Ladakh but because of the spurt in terror-related activities in the Kashmir Valley and misdeeds of Kashmiri rulers like Farooq Abdullah and the Congress' unstinted support to him. They rigged the 1987 elections; they created Salahuddin. Jammu and Ladakh was peaceful then and peaceful even today," they are saying. They are asking: "Why should the people of Jammu and Ladakh, whose commitment to India is exemplary and who are ardent Indians, suffer for the Kashmir trouble?"
The upshot of their own argument is that "there is the urgent need to create two additional legislative assemblies, one each for Jammu province and Ladakh region so that the people there are not denied their right to have governments of their own choice". In other words, they are pitching for reorganization of the state, saying the "Narendra Modi government must come out with a reform scheme that ends 70-year-old Kashmir domination over the state politics and enables Jammu and Ladakh to have their own governments".
The views of the concerned citizens cannot be brushed aside. They do make a point when they ask, "Why should people of Jammu and Ladakh suffer for the wrongs committed by Kashmiri leaders?"
