Militant attack leads to death of one CRPF jawan at Batmaloo

SRINAGAR, July 24: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was killed while as his accomplice was injured after militants attacked the security forces personnel who had laid a naka in the Batmaloo area of Srinagar, summer capital of the state today.
Reports said that some militants appeared near the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services department in the Batmaloo area and fired upon the CRPF personnel manning the naka laid by them. The incident occurred at around 4:15 PM when the area was busy with activities all around. The firing incident led to pandemonium in the area with the people running for safety.
The firing from the militants left two CRPF personnel injured and both of them were shifted to a hospital for treatment. At the hospital one of the injured CRPF personnel succumbed to his injuries. The condition of the other CRPF jawan is stated to be stable and he has been discharged from the hospital. The militants said to two in number and riding a motor-cycle, managed to run away from the site of the shootout. Following the incident the area was cordoned off by police and security forces in order to nab the attackers. Although, some of the people were questioned about the incident none among them was arrested.
Police and security forces gathered information about the various facets of the attack from the people who are running their shops in the area or are working as salespersons. Some of the youth clashed with police and security forces and the situation turned out to be volatile in Batmaloo and adjacent areas.
A police spokesman said that militants this afternoon fired at the security forces personnel at Batmaloo near Fire & Emergency Services. Taking advantage of the crowd in the area, the assailants managed to flee, the spokesman said.
"In the process, two security forces personnel got injured in the firing incident. They were subsequently shifted to the nearby hospital for medical attention where one security force jawan constable Shanker Lal of 23Battalion CRPF succumbed to his injuries. The other jawan has now been discharged from the hospital," said the police spokesman. Police has registered a case and investigation in the instant matter has been initiated. Initial investigation into the case has led to some tangible leads on which police is working. Later in the day police released some of the pictures of the assailants riding the motor-cycle.
Militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the attack.
