Poonch town faces acute water shortage

POONCH, July 24: Several parts of the Poonch town are facing acute water shortage as the main pumping station (ITI Poonch) which provides water to half of the city got damaged.
People are up in arms against the authorities for failing to provide regular water supply. They alleged that despite knowing the reason of dysfunctional pumping station the officials concerned have done nothing.
Several areas of the town are reeling under acute scarcity of drinking water from the past five days. We are facing shortage of drinking water and the authorities are doing nothing. We are being forced to come on roads, alleged a group of residents from the Mohalla Basant Garh area of the town.
Similar complaints were received from the Mohalla Gurudwara Singh Sabha, Geeta Bhawan, Sarain, Suthra Bawli etc. "The authorities have failed to provide us any relief in the month of high humidity," said, Rudransh Sudan, a resident of Mohalla Gurudwara Singh Sabha.
Residents from Power House, Guru Niwas, Kamma Khan, Mohalla Panditan
also complained of continuous water scarcity for the last many days.
The residents, meanwhile, threatened to protest if the problem was not resolved at the earliest.
Public Health Engineering (PHE) officials admitted that half of the city has been passing through a water crises due to the fault in the main motor in the ITI pumping station.
"We are trying to provide maximum water supply to all areas, but
people should also cooperate. They should not waste water. It creates
problem in the distribution," said a PHE official.
Despite repeated calls, the Executive Engineer Poonch Rajinder Sharma could not be contacted.
