Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Aug 11: Police used force and foiled the protest rally carried out by employees of Urban Local Bodies in support of their demands today. The police action meant that the employees don't move towards the Raj Bhawan here.
Reports here said that scores of daily wagers as well as consolidated employees of Urban Local Bodies along with the other employees of the department assembled at Pratap Park here and carried out a protest programme in support of their demands. The protesters raised slogans in support of their demands.
The protesters while carrying banners and placards in their hands alleged that the previous state government failed to redress the issues confronting the daily wagers as well as consolidated employees of the department. They lamented that Governor led dispensation too has failed to solve the genuine problems of the 'hapless' lot.
From the Pratap Park the protesters marched towards the Press Enclave and carried out high pitch sloganeering there as well.
They said that the people at helm have pushed the daily wagers and consolidated employees towards the wall and they are suffering for no fault of theirs.
Addressing the protesting employees, Urban Local Bodies Employees United Forum (ULBEUF) President, Manzoor Ahmad Pampori said that the government should take immediate steps to regularize services of daily wagers and consolidated employees working in the department under SRO 64. He said the demand has been pending for a long time and it needs to be fulfilled at the earliest.
"Despite discharging services for years together the daily wagers and consolidated employees are not being regularized.
There are scores of other employees whose salaries have been kept withheld for the past three or four months now. It is important that Governor N N Vohra intervenes in the matter and solves the problems of employees," said Pampori.
The President ULBEUF said that most of the daily wagers and consolidated employees are working in the department for the past eight to 15 years and still then they have not been regularized.
He said if the regularization process is not taken up under SRO 64 quickly then a full-fledged agitation would be carried out after the festival of Eid-ul-Azha.
"Despite being an important department the urban local bodies department is being given a step motherly treatment by the state government. For the last 25 days there is no Director at the department as the previous Director was shifted to some other department. An honest and capable officer should be asked to head the department," said Pampori.
The President ULBEUF said that the employees of the department are putting in their best efforts but still then their genuine demands are putting to the back burner. He demanded that a particular time frame should be set so that the demands of employees are met by that date.
