Early Times Report
REASI, Nov 27: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology - Jammu (SKUAST-J) organized campaign on seed treatment in wheat crop at village Bharakh of Pouni block in Reasi district of J&K.
The programme was organised under the supervision and guidance of Associate Director Extension and Incharge KVKs of SKUAST-J, Dr.R.K.Arora. Dr. Banarsi Lal, Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi welcomed of the farmers and gave a detail view about the seed treatment in wheat crop. He educated the farmers on loose smut of wheat which is a destructive disease in the crop and badly affects the yield of wheat crop.
He narrated that this disease is caused by a smut fungus called Ustilago tritici which causes huge loss in the wheat crop and ultimately affects the farmers' economy. He said the farmers that the diseased plants are indistinguishable from the healthy plants before heading. He narrated that the aforementioned fungus destroys the wheat ears completely and convert them into black powdery mass consisting of spores. He informed that this fungus is internally seed borne and becomes active as the germination starts. He further added that as the ear formation starts, there is an accumulation of the fungus in the floral parts which is completely destroyed due to the formation of black powder.
He recommended Carbendazim@ 2gm/Kg of wheat seed to control this chronic disease in wheat crop. He also explained the solar heat treatment of wheat seed as an alternative to chemical method. Dr.Sanjay Kaushal, scientist said the farmers that the fungus causing loose smut in wheat can be controlled by treating the wheat seed with the recommended fungicides before sowing. He elaborated the methodology for the seed treatment in wheat crop.
