Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 27: Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Nationals Panthers Party Harsh Dev Singh during the past few years has emerged as a strong voice from Jammu region. He has raised the issues which touch the skin of a common man in Jammu.
During the past few years he has staged more than 400 protests and has tried his best to become the voice of Jammu. When AIIMS was sanctioned for Kashmir and not for Jammu region, he was the first man to raise his voice against the discrimination being meted out with the Jammu. Harsh Dev hitting the streets sent alarm bells ringing in Jammu which led to people joining him. The peaceful agitation staged by the Jammu people left the then PDP-BJP regime with no other option other than to approach the Centre and get AIIMS sanctioned for Jammu region also.
Harsh Dev played an important role when Centre sanctioned 10,000 posts of special police officers for J&K. But most of the posts were bagged by the Valley and Jammu was left in lurch. Harsh Dev along with his supporters took the government head on and brought the discrimination with Jammu region to fore.
When PDP led government granted amnesty to more than 10,000 stone-pelters in Kashmir Harsh Dev Singh demanded the same amnesty for the Jammu youth who were booked on different charges. There is a long list of issues which Singh highlighted during these years and his efforts have been recognized by the people.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "Harsh Dev Singh has played a role of a strong opposition leader in Jammu region. Had his party won a few seats in the 2014 assembly elections, BJP would have found it difficult to take Jammu people for a ride. Singh despite not being an MLA highlighted the issues of his people and has pointed out the shortcomings of the BJP leaders."
An observer said that people of Jammu region have been watching Harsh Dev Singh keenly and have been participating in his programmes. "They (people) know that he has been representing their sentiments and if he remains consistent on his stand he could challenge the hegemony of the BJP leaders, who since 2014 have been dancing to the tunes of Kashmir centric politicians," the observer added.
He said that now the time has come for Jammu people to repose faith on Singh and his leadership so that the leaders, who took people of Jammu for a ride during past four years, are shown their right place.
