BJP's direct rule in J&K
Act or perish

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 19: December 19 is a very important day both in the history of J&K and the BJP, once considered a marginal outfit in the state. It's important day in the history of the state because it was on July 18, 1990 that the state was brought under the President's rule.
And it was important day for the BJP because on Wednesday, the state was against brought under the President's rule.
The President's rule means the rule of a party that is ruling the Centre. In other words, the President's rule in J&K is the BJP's rule for all practical purposes.
The President of India belonged to the BJP. The Prime Minister of India belongs to the BJP. The Union Home Minister belongs to the BJP. The Law Minister of India belongs to the BJP and the Governor of J&K also belonged to the BJP. During the President's rule, all powers - constitutional, legislative and financial - are exercised by the Central Government. It can undo the wrongs the so-called popular governments in J&K committed from time to time. Similarly, it has the power to undo the wrongs the Central governments committed in the state from time to time. Hence, the BJP government at the Centre from today is in a position to do what it wants to do. It can't say "excuse me; I can't do this or I can't do that".
In fact, the imposition of the President's rule in the state is a God-sent opportunity for the BJP to rectify the mistakes it itself committed and conciliate and mollify the people it itself alienated. It alienated the people of Jammu by becoming a party to the PDP's anti-Jammu policies and by not fulfilling any of the promises it had made. It had promised moon to the people of Jammu but left them in the lurch by selling the Jammu mandate to the Muftis. It also alienated the people of Ladakh, especially the Buddhists by not fulfilling the commitments it had made through its election manifesto, vision document and election speeches. Two among them were: "Give us vote, we will give you UT and include Bhoti language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution".
The BJP also alienated Hindu refugees from Kashmir, Hindu-Sikh refugees from Pakistan and refugees from PoJK. It neither resettled the Kashmiri Hindus in the Valley by creating homeland for them. Nor did it grant citizenship rights to the refugees from Pakistan. It also failed to meet the demands of nearly 10 lakh refugees from PoJK. The BJP also alienated the minorities in the state, including Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Christians by denying them minority rights.
But more than that, the BJP alienated its own core supporters and committed members of the Parivar who wanted gender equality between male and females of the state and the state's complete integration into India or who wanted the BJP to tread the path SP Mookerjee charted for it in 1953 by laying down his life in Kashmir for the sake the state's integration into India.
These are only some of the sections of society the BJP alienated by hobnobbing with the Muftis. If it is to remain relevant in Jammu and Ladakh, it has to take some concrete measures aimed at winning over all these alienated sections.
As for Kashmir, it has no say there. The BJP will perish if it failed to read the writing on the wall and undo the wrongs it committed, particularly between March 1, 2015 and June 19, 2018.
