Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 21: Controversy has surfaced over excavation of a Lingam from Kralpora village of Magam in Budgam district of Central Kashmir three months ago.. According to reports three months ago, a Lingam was excavated from a local family of Kralpora village in Budgam district.
After excavation, the family disclosed that a local Goldsmith took it saying that he will check whether there is not some mettle in it. Later he kept it with him for one month. The family members said that when the gold Smith did not return the same up to one month they went to his shop demanding the Lingam back.
However the gold Smith pacified them saying not to make hue and cry as he will pay a hefty sum to them. The family pacified and returned. Later the Goldsmith refused to pay the sum.
In the meantime the police came to know about the same and it raided the gold smith and seized the lingam. The police refused the allegation of the locals that Lingam was of a precious metal as alleged by villagers. However the police have registered a case under various sections of law against gold smith and family for keeping the excavated Lingam with them. .
Sources said police had asked the family and goldsmith against whom FIR was registered that nobody can keep the excavated material with him without informing the concerned Department of Archives and Museums which is the custodian of such property.
Sources said that some locals have alleged that there was a precious idol attached to Lingam which has been kept hidden by Goldsmith in connivance with police.
They demanded that the gold smith be interrogated to unravel the facts.
The Archives Department as per sources was also ignorant of the excavation and it has refused to take the Lingam from police and instead will receive the Lingam from the court. As mystery shrouds recovery of Lingam with contradictory statements of family and Goldsmith the Kashmiri Pandits and some Hindu bodies including VHP have sought the intervention of Governor in the matter.
