Altaf Bukhari heading towards National Conference?
Twist in the Tale
1/9/2019 11:14:09 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 9: Peoples Democratic Party seems to be heading towards yet another major split as the senior leader of the party and former Finance Minister, Altaf Bukhari, who is reportedly "unhappy" with the party leadership has hinted at the possibility about him formally saying goodbye to the party.
Altaf Bukhari on Tuesday endorsed the view of former Chief Minister and NC vice-president Omar Abdullah that coalition politics had ruined Jammu and Kashmir.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said that Bukhari endorsing Omar's view is an indication that he may also quit PDP and join the National Conference. "Already Basharat Bukhari, Peer Muhammad Hussain and few middle rung PDP leaders have joined the NC. Bharatiya Janata Party saying goodbye to PDP has led to its decimation. It's clear that the power was the binding force and after losing power PDP has fallen like a pack of cards," he added.
While addressing the PDP workers on the third death anniversary of her late father Mehbooba Mufti in an apparent reference to Altaf Bukhari had said that she was forced by some people within her party to join hands with the BJP in 2016 after her father and former Chief Minister of J&K passed away. She spilled the beans by stating that had she not formed the government at that point of time, she would have been dislodged.
A Kashmir watcher said that with each passing day its becoming clear that PDP had split on the very day when late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed passed away. He (late Mufti) was a binding force which had kept the party together. "Mufti's death brought factionalism within the party to fore. Mehbooba had realized it soon after her father's death. After she took over as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir she did not include Altaf Bukhari in her council of ministers. It was a clear message to Bukhari that government can run without him and she is very well aware about his activities," the Kashmir watcher added.
A politician said that fall of the PDP-BJP government and subsequent dissolution of J&K Assembly led to PDP falling apart. "The events which have taken place during the past six months have proved that PDP turned out to be a biggest loser. The party has lost its foothold in the Valley and the leaders who used to tell Mehbooba that she is the "queen" are looking for ways and means to get themselves rehabilitated. National Conference and BJP have remained intact. PDP is the only party which has suffered," he added.
