Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 14: Some of the top hotels in Kashmir owned by prominent business families of Kashmir owe millions as electricity fee towards the Power Development Department and haven't cleared the hefty amounts for months together as the government had been silent over the loss to the state exchequer.
Sources said during the Peoples Democratic Party and the Bharatiya Janta Party regime, some of these influential businessmen didn't pay their electricity bills and were allegedly looking ahead to get power without clearing the dues.
Sources said the government woke up to the issue only recently but has again given two week's deadline to the "defaulters" to clear the dues or that their connections would be snapped.
Officials said all such alleged defaulters owe more than Rs ten lakh each to the government while the bills of some of them run into crores of rupees. Officials said notices have been served to all such consumers from the "influential lobby".
Official documents said that Hotel Hill Star at New Buchwara in Srinagar owes Rs 29,37,673. Remano Hotel at Raj Bagh owes Rs 29,25,369. Likewise Hotel Snow Peak at RajBagh owes Rs 71,84,937. Ikhwan Hotel at Munawarabad owes 2,77,86,682 to the state government.
Officials said this was "tip of the iceberg" as this was only the list of hotels from Srinagar alone.
"Some of the leading hotels at resorts like in Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonamarg also owe big bills and that will also be put in public domain soon," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said some of the influential businessmen in Kashmir were in the "good books" of the PDP-BJP government and thus enjoyed "such relaxations that were burdening the state exchequer."
"Such business families from Kashmir were waiting for amnesty in clearance of bills but their dreams failed as the alliance collapsed suddenly," said source in the state government.
When contacted a senior official confirmed about the cases.
"Disconnection notices have been served to all such cases under section 50 of J&K Electricity Act of 2010," he told Early Times.
