Fresh snowfall cuts off border areas from mainland

KUPWARA, Feb 6: Fresh snowfall has cut border areas from the mainland with the concerned departments having failed to provide electricity to the affected areas.
Sijad Khan from Chowkibal Kupwara said that, due to the fresh snowfall, various roads leading to the border areas have not been cleared yet, and with the result the passengers and other vehicular movement got disturbed today.
Due to the heavy snowfall in the upper reaches of Kupwara, most of the areas remained cut off from the district headquarter, he said.
Bashir Ahmad who was stranded on Sadhna top said that, on Feb 5, there was an advisory of moderate to heavy snowfall by MeT department, and despite that the department of R&B was supposed to keep men and machinery ready for the snow clearance.
"From several years, we have been demanding from the government for the construction of tunnel at Sadhna top so that it could connect Karnah, Tangdhar, Keran, Teetwal and other border areas with rest of the world, but they are always turning deaf ear to our pleas, said resident of Karnah.
He said that in Kupwara town machines were on the job today to restore the inner links, but the other villages of this district have been left at the mercy of God.
However sources in Bandipora said that, the higher reaches of Bandipora district including Gurez valley received heavy snowfall while plains also received moderate snowfall and rains on Wednesday.
Higher reaches of Bandipora including Gurez, Tulail, Vewan, Labkachal, Bhutoo, Gujjarpati Branar, and Tragbal area also received heavy snowfall till the last reports came in, said sources.
Sources said that the authorities have appealed the people not to venture out in upper reaches as there could be a possibility of avalanches.
While as most of the upper reaches of Baramulla district including famous ski resort of Gulmarag has also received fresh snowfall thus disrupted normal life, while at many places electricity has got disrupted and left people in darkness.
The traffic on national highway was slow, due to slippery of roads and many vehicles were got stranded on Narbal-Gulmarag road, and in other areas of north Kashmir for hours together, sources informed.
