Where was Congress between 2002 and 2014?
Political parties betraying Jammu
2/6/2019 11:10:35 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 6: The JKPCC chief GA Mir and many other Congress leaders, including those from Jammu, have virtually started election campaign in Jammu with whose help Congress enjoyed power in the state for years either in alliance with the NC or the PDP. Between 1965 and 1975, the Congress ruled the state on its own and after 1975 the political situation in the state changed completely after Indira Gandhi dislodged her own party's government to bring back to power the deflated Sheikh Abdullah whose father JL Nehru had dethroned him and got him arrested on the charge of sedition.
The Congress leaders, including Mir, have been trying to convince the discriminated against people of Jammu province that the Congress is the only party that can accord equal treatment to all the three regions of the state and end the menace of discrimination. They have been accusing the BJP of letting down the people of Jammu province by not fulfilling the promises it had made during the 2014 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections and urging the people of the province to dump the BJP and vote for the Congress in large numbers so that they obtained their due share in the political and economic processes in the state.
These Congress leaders are conveniently ignoring what they did to the promises their party made to the people of Jammu province in 2002 and 2008 through its election manifestos. In 2002, the Congress sought votes in Jammu holding out a categorical commitment that the Congress, if came into power in the state, will establish regional development board so that the people of the province could manage their own development-related issue. The Congress did become part of the Mufti Sayeed-led government and remained in power between November 5, 2002 and July 7, 2008, but it did nothing to fulfill the promise. On the contrary, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said there was no need for regional development boards as the state already had district development boards. And he made this statement in Asia Hotel. The even had been organized by the Congress leader Gulchain Singh Charak. The PDP-led the coalition government between November 2002 and November 2008 and the Ghulam Nabi Azad led the government till July 7, 2008, when he resigned without seeking vote of confidence. The Amarnath land row brought down his government.
In 2008, the Congress abandoned the regional development council plank and came out with the regional council slogan. Its election manifesto said that the Congress, if it came into power, will amend the J&K Constitution to federalize the state polity so that each region enjoyed equal powers. It became part of the Omar Abdullah-led coalition government, which remained in office for full six years. The Congress again betrayed the people of Jammu province despite the fact that it had almost equal number of Cabinet Ministers.
The people of Jammu province know the Congress through and through and they also know that all the political parties, including the NC, the PDP, the Congress and the BJP, are Kashmir-centric and that all these parties had betrayed them again, again and yet again in a most brazen manner. It would be better if the Congress leaders think 100 times before they speak about Jammu province and the aspirations of its people.
