Katra, Mar 10: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital (SMVDNSH), Katra preformed first complex skull base facial surgery. The surgery was done on a 55 year old woman who was suffering from sino-nasal undifferentiated carcinoma,a rare cancer which affects the nasal cavity and maxillary sinus involving skull base.
Hailing from Poonch, the patient was suffering from frequent nasal bleeding and blockage. A comprehensive evaluation including CT scan and MRI at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital revealed that the patient had a tumor mass extending from nasal cavity involving right maxillary sinus, right medial orbital wall, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. Though a risky condition, the complicated case was taken by the doctors at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital.
The 5 hour long surgery was performed by Dr. Paras Khanna,Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Arjun Malhotra Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Mahendar Pall Neuro-surgeon and Dr. Vikas Heer, Surgeon. The anesthesia team was led by Dr. Trupti Modi. The Tumor was successfully operated with clearances from the base of skull and the eye ball was carefully preserved. Today, the patient is cured from the dreaded disease and is leading a healthy life.
