Early Times Report

Kishtwar, Mar 19: In a glaring incident of official apathy, the people in Kuntwara District trekked 13 Km through difficult terrain and heavy snow carrying electric transformer so that they could get electricity in the village which lacks basic facilities like roads, health facilities, education and power even after 70 years of independence.
As per the details available with ET, the villagers from Kuttal village of Kuntwara along with the hired laborers dragged transformer from nearest road point to the village so that same could be installed and they could get electricity.
The sources said that many transformers suffered damages due to recent heavy snowfall in the Chenab valley and the department is facing difficulty in restoration of electricity in far flung and inaccessible areas of Kishtwar District like Machail, Dachhan and far flung areas of Nagsini.
Speaking to "Early Times", the locals informed that the foundation stone for bridge over river Chenab was laid by former R&B Minister Ghulam Mohammad Saroori around 10 years ago while the construction of work on Kuntwara road was started around 10-12 years ago but after removal of G M Saroori from the R&B Ministry in NC-Congress Government headed by Omar Abdullah, both the construction of bridge and road was fraught with issues.
The people said that due to non availability of road, the Kuntwara area lacks development as no officer or employees prefers to visit this area. They said that the school also lacks basic infrastructure.
They said that the area is traditionally the vote bank of BJP but despite BJP government both at center and state it failed in addressing the problems faced by the people of Kuntwara.
Meanwhile I/C Executive Engineer PDD Kishtwar Sudhir Sharma said that department makes all its efforts to provide electricity to the people but due to lack of road connectivity, they have to shift the transformers manually. He said that the people who were involved in shifting the transformer will be paid. He said that the electricity in all the electrified villages had been restored.
He said that the government provided solar power packs to block Marwah and Warwan having population of around 40000 souls as a part of off grid power supply as both the blocks lack grid connectivity. He said that efforts are on to provide grid connectivity to Marwah and Warwan blocks of Kishtwar District for which the government had already floated tenders.
