Jammu, Mar 31

The University of Jammu has yet again made another attempt to “accommodate” a private coach in the discipline of fencing without advertising the post as an official handout issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Amateur Fencing Association on Mar 28 cleared the dust after the designation of the said coach was mentioned in it.

As per the handout circulated to the media houses on March 28 after the closing ceremony of the State Fencing Association, the name of one of the “self styled” coaches was also mentioned with a designation “Fencing Coach, Jammu University”.

But whose coach is he?

However, the mention of the designation with the name of the coach raised many eyebrows in the sports arena especially those associated with the Department of Physical Education, Jammu University.

“The concerned authorities must clarify whether the coach was appointed or not,” said a senior player in the Department adding that if he has been officially appointed then what criteria was adopted by the concerned department and if not, then who circulated an official handout of the J&K Amateur Fencing Association, mentioned him as “Fencing Coach, Jammu University.”

Moreover the handout circulated on behalf of the J&K Amateur Fencing Association, was not signed by any of the officials and not even released on official letter head of the Fencing Body.

“This clearly shows that it was an attempt by some of the vested interests operating within the Jammu University and the Fencing Association, who are trying their best to get this blue eyed coach accommodated into the Jammu University through backdoor appointment without advertising a post,” said sources.

They also rued, that if the blunder was caused intentionally or un-intentionally, why the Jammu University did not react to it by issuing a clarification or a corrigendum whether the said coach officially belonged to them or not.

“We require coaches but for the time being, we have made requests to several associations of the State Sports Council to provide their coaches and we have some of them with us,” Daud Iqbal, Director, Department of Physical Education told this correspondent.

“We have not issued any handout from the Jammu University side but as far as the post of coach is concerned, we will soon be taking up the matter in an upcoming meeting with the Vice Chancellor because the department needs more professional coaches to further boost sports activity,” said the Director.

He however, expressed ignorance over handout circulated to the media mentioning the coach as “Fencing Coach of Jammu University”.

Pertinent to mention here that the Early Times in its December 25, 2018 report had already exposed that the Directorate of Physical Education is allegedly trying to accommodate a private coach in the fencing discipline, who is neither an employee of State Sports Council nor of Department of Youth Services and Sports and is holding training sessions in the Jammu University campus.
