Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 9: In yet another major security breach in Kishtwar town following the killing of Parihar brothers, unidentified militants entered inside the premises of District Hospital Kishtwar in broad day light on Tuesday and fired volley of gun shots at 52 year old top RSS leader Chander Kant Sharma and his PSO. While his PSO Rajinder Kumar died on spot, the militants managed to escape from the spot along with the official weapon of the deceased PSO.
As per the details available with ET, the senior Rashtriya Swavayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) leader and prominent anti-militancy operation activist who is known for his loud nationalist voice was silenced by militants leaving the security agencies and administration in shock. The attack on the deceased RSS leader was third in last over a decade.
Chander Kant Sharma was pioneer to "Quit Chenab valley movement" in 90s when militancy was at its peak in Doda District when he along with some youths of the Chenab valley voluntarily offered support to security forces in eliminating the terrorist and played key role in preventing the migrations of minority community from the area. He along with deceased RSS leaders Sheru, Satish Bhandari, Jajdeep, Pawan Sen and others played key role in strengthening the nationalism and after surviving multiple attacks, Chander Kant fell prey to bullets.
Shockingly, MoS PMO Dr. Jitendra Singh instead of cancelling the scheduled political rallies, preferred to visit Machail in Kishtwar District for addressing a political rally while deceased RSS leader was to be airlifted to Government Medical College Jammu where he breathed his last. People gathered outside GMC Hospital Jammu also questioned the absence of Ex MLA Kishtwar and MoS PMO and questioned how both failed to rush to Jammu along with the injured RSS leader.
"They must have accompanied him instead of addressing the Public meetings" said Indu Devi, a local from Kishtwar who was veiling outside GMC Jammu.
The eye witnesses said that Chander Kant Sharma along with his personal security officer was about to leave Kishtwar District Hospital where he was posted as medical officer, when suspected militants (two in numbers) attacked him.
Hearing gun fire inside the hospital, the patients and their attendants along with Hospital staff ran for shelter, while police and other security personal rushed to the spot.
As the news about deadly attack spread in the hilly town, people belonging to RSS and BJP in large number rushed towards the District Hospital Kishtwar and staged a violent protest.
They allegedly damaged some furniture, equipment in the hospital and window panes in a fit of anger while shouting slogans against the administration and police department for their failure to provide security to the people.
Immediately, Minister of State in PMO Dr Jitendra Singh alongwith Sunil Sharma -ex-Minister in Mehbooba Mufti Government- rushed there and the critically injured RSS leader was airlifted to GMC Jammu Hospital for specialized treatment. However, Kant succumbed to his injuries.
"With heavy heart I am confirming the death of our beloved Chander Kant Sharma who played key role in promoting and encouraging the Nationalist forces in Chenab valley when militancy was at its peak" said BJP MLC Ramesh Arora.
Following the killing, situation in Kishtwar turned tense, and massive protest demonstration were held outside Police Station Kishtwar while similar demonstration was organized in Bhaderwah's Seri Bazaar and Jammu where people assembled outside GMC Hospital and demonstrated against the killing.
Sensing trouble, the civil administration in Kishtwar imposed curfew restrictions. Meanwhile, security has been tightened in sensitive areas of Jammu division to maintain communal harmony. The fresh killing has sparked fear among the people.
Pertinently, Kant was provided with additional PSOs by the Jammu and Kashmir police after the killing of Parihar brothers few months back.
A senior police official said that curfew had been imposed in Kishtwar while internet services have also been suspended in the area. He said that the mortal remains of the deceased RSS leader had been airlifted to Kishtwar where the board of doctors conducted autopsy on him and later handed over the dead body to his family members for last rites which will be held tomorrow.
Meanwhile; search operation has also been launched across the hilly town to apprehend the fleeing militants beside all the entry and exit points leading towards Kishtwar town has been sealed.
