Toilet for all, a mere slogan for New Rajeev Nagar Colony

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 27: Five years after the launch of Swachh Bharat Mission by Union government, the "toilet for all" remains a mere slogan especially for the residents of New Rajeev Nagar Colony, who defecate in open space, mostly in Suryaputri Tawi.
Located just few meters from famous Bikram Chowk, the New Rajeev Nagar Colony has over 200 households and most of them have either no toilet facility or some of them have constructed toilets on their own. Residents of area Vishal Sharma, Sunil Kumar, Rahim, Vinod Kumar, Ritu Kumari, Aakash, Mohammad Aslam, Mithun, Balwinder Kumar and Bawa Ram informed Early Times that time and again they called on the concerned authorities for the construction of toilets or the community toilets in the area but except assurances they have got nothing.
"Most of the families have no toilet facilities due to which all have been forced to defecate openly inside river Tawi. At one hand Prime Minister Narender Modi has been doing a lot for the poor people but the aforementioned area remains neglected to this day", the locals said, adding that some of families have constructed the toilets after spending from their own pocket but these toilets were also not as per some design while the outlet of the toilet went directly to the drain or a small pit dup up for the purpose.
The locals further claimed that they had taken up the matter with the concerned but all in vain. "The local representatives have also not paid any heed towards our grievances", the locals said, adding that the drains were fully choked and the rain water easily flowed into the houses.
Even without rains the water-logged drains, have been emanating foul smell while it also led to breeding of insects and reptiles, which ultimately entered into our houses. "The respective representatives have ignored the area for reasons best known to them", the locals said, adding that if such would be the volume of neglect to the area, which was at the heart of the city, then one could easily imagine the condition of other areas, which spoke volumes about the non-serious attitude of authorities towards the citizens.
