Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, July 27: Though time can heal wounds yet apathy by those at the helm has yielded nothing even after five years to bring life back on rails for Saddalo hamlet.
It is pertinent to mention here that Saddal hamlet was devastated in 2014 by a deadly landslide killing 40 people and causing a large scale devastation to the property.
About 44 kms from district headquarters Udhampur, the devastated hamlet has no power, no water supply, no school building and no road.
A local said all was in order here before the natural calamity hit this village.
"There used to be a primary and a middle school in the village with proper buildings both of which were destroyed in the landslide,"
A housewife informed adding that since then students are continuing their classes in the open.
She also rued power scenario in the village and said that poles and wiring work was underway in the village yet no house has electricity.
Sarpanch Koshal of Panchayat Panjar under which village Saddal falls informed that the hamlet has a population of 500-600 while others live in government camp at Jakhar.
He also said that some people in the village used compensation money, given by district administration after landslide, to build make shaft houses where they are living now.
"However, the authorities concerned have promised 87 concrete houses in the village of which one was completed last year while work on nine others is underway now after which rest of the houses will be constructed," he informed adding that apart from this Lok Sabha member, Dr Jatinder Singh has given 87 solar lights to the village.
More villagers complained that there is no water supply in the village since the year 2014 after the pipes were damaged in the landslide and none cared to repair them.
Sources further informed that a road to the village is also under-construction.
Ramesh, a local said the landslide distorted the earth in the village and if leveling of the land is done people may carry on agriculture activities here.
