SRINAGAR, Dec 27: The Union government has left no stone unturned in beautifying the Kashmir valley and its water bodies, but the Dal Lake is silently dying with each passing day, and locals believe only 20 percent water out of total can be used for drinking.
According to sources that, around 80 percent water has been polluted and only 10-20 percent water can be consumed and during this harsh winter the locals that are staying legally or illegally cannot get the clean drinking water as they were supposed to.
Sources said that almost 7-8 crore rupees were allocated for its development, but one fails to understand that why the huge amount was not properly utilized so for and today one is witnessing the residential colonies and hotels that have been constructed over the banks of Dal Lake.
The local boatmen believes that, it has become a difficult task for them to cross over to other areas, as weeds and long grass is scattered over there, it seems that the lake is choked with weeds.
The local Dal-dwellers also pollute it, where as times the men Srinagar from Hospital, Hotel owners, local vendors were seen throwing solid waste products into the Dal Lake, locals told early times.
Even though people dump their soft drink bottles, polythene and other items into the Lake without thinking of future consequences and for all this mess it is the concerned department that should be held responsible.
I have myself seen during evening hours that some local women were carrying a dust bin in their hands and emptied it into the Dal and the same case is with other people who are staying as Paying Guests (PGs).
Javid Ahmad who has taken three rooms on rent in Dal Lake said that, there are no dustbins and if that are some where they are cleaned and scattered by stray dogs, while as stray dogs have unleashed a reign of terror in the area.
There is no drainage system through which de-congested water can be released, there is no outlet, it goes from one side and enters from the other end, said Javid.
However sources further said that, from time to time, union government has allocated huge amount to the (Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) but nobody knows where that was spent as there are no fruitful results on the ground.
Sources quoting the employees of pollution department as having said that only 20% water from lake can be used for drinking and even though for other daily needs too like cooking and washing.
Local resident of the Nehru Park, Mushtaq Ahmad said that, many times Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA), adding the concerned department has is in a deep slumber and is not taking any steps or to accelerate their men and machinery to de-weed it.
