Separate townships for displaced KPs
1/2/2020 10:42:28 PM
The displaced Kashmiri Pandits, who were forced to flee the Valley in 1990 after the armed insurgency broke out in Kashmir, are still waiting for the day when they would be able to return to their homeland. With the transition of the erstwhile J&K State into a Union Territory they are hoping that their wait will end soon as the things are moving at a rapid pace. The displaced KPs are demanding that the Jammu and Kashmir administration should establish three townships in the Valley to end their 30-year old exile. The proposal which has been mooted by the members of the displaced community suggests that three separate townships should be set up at Anantnag, Baramulla and Srinagar as it would be impossible for them to go back and resettle at their native places. The idea to set up separate townships for displaced Kashmiri Pandits was first floated in the year 2008 and 2009 but the then NC-Congress regime in the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir did not pay much attention towards the issue and the matter was pushed under the carpet. After BJP came into power in 2014 in the Centre the matter was taken up again. The then PDP-BJP government in J&K had claimed that the land for the townships has already been identified but no headway could be made due to the opposition by the separatists in Kashmir.
At that point of time Centre was very keen on building these separate townships for the members of the displaced Kashmiri Pandits but the Peoples Democratic Party which was the senior partner in the PDP-BJP government in J&K was in no mood to annoy the separatists. The PDP leaders managed to sabotage the entire process, and sent a message to the Pak stooges that it won't against their wishes.
After the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir the entire scenario has changed and the Centre is directly ruling the Union Territory of J&K. The UT administration should gear up and expedite the process of resettling the displaced Kashmiri Pandits in their homeland. Politicians who could have sabotaged the move have become irrelevant.
The people at the helm need to go through the proposals which were prepared during the erstwhile regimes. All the paperwork has been done. These proposals have been awaiting implementation for long. These proposals just need a much awaited push. It would set the ball rolling for rehabilitation of displaced KPs in their homeland.
