Early Times Report

JAMMU, Jan 2: With the establishment of the newly established Medical Colleges in the Jammu and Kashmir has increased the work load of Jammu University and Kashmir University too but unfortunately the proposal of the establishment of two Medical Universities in Jammu as well as Kashmir is still hanged in the balance.
However, one more district (Udhampur) got approval from Government of India for establishing Medical College which will also put more burden on already overburden University of Jammu.
Senior doctors told that the five Medical Colleges, three Medical Colleges for Jammu and two for Srinagar Province have been made functional and one more medical college will be functional coming days but no efforts being made to establish the much needed separate medical universities to cater their requirements.
Recalling, sources added that a detailed proposal had been submitted to Health and Medical Education Department three years ago for the establishment of autonomous deemed Medical University of Health Sciences, in Jammu and Kashmir but owing to lack of interest no such step was taken to execute the proposal.
Sources further told that there were 30 Deemed Medical Universities and 14 Full Medical Universities, 10 being state controlled in all over India but in Jammu and Kashmir there was no Medical University since the inception of Medical Colleges and all curriculums were being handled by non- technical Universities, University of Jammu and the University of Kashmir.
In the absence of technical universities the already existed Dental Colleges, Medical Colleges, Government Nursing Colleges, Paramedical Institutes, Physiotherapy Colleges and others have been increased the workload on Universities of the UT. The non technical Universities are overburdened with the examinations and other academic affairs and to run medical colleges are cumbersome job for them.
