Local political parties under scanner for torching of shops in Kashmir
1/3/2020 12:02:24 AM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 2: In a shocking development, some of the regional political parties of Kashmir from the mainstream have come under scanner for allegedly being involved in torching of shops in valley since the abrogation of the special status on August 5.
Sources said the Jammu and Kashmir Police have credible inputs that the incidents of burning of shops which had defied hartal call in the summer capital of Srinagar and other districts were linked to some local parties.
“Those who are believed to be behind such anti-national activities are linked to some such political parties. We have credible evidence on this front,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said the matter is being probed and that the police and the civil administration were likely to give a press conference in this regard in the coming days to expose the link of political parties in such anti-national activities.
Officials said the connection between anti-national elements and the local parties is nothing new adding that such evidence was found even during the street protests of 2009, 2010 and 2016 when some netas were found to be allegedly fueling the protests to meet their vote bank interests.
In the last over four months, a number of shops were gutted in mysterious incidents of fire. Officials said what was peculiar about the affected shops was that they had been defying the hartal against the abrogation of the special status.
In the latest, petrol was poured on shops in prominent marketplaces like the Lambert Lane and Ganai Khan markets in Srinagar but the business establishments were saved by the timely action of police who swung into action “before the anti-national elements would execute their nefarious designs.”
Official sources said over two dozen incidents of fire were reported in the last few weeks alone.
The police are already keeping vigil if petrol pumps were selling the explosive fuel in open to miscreants.
