Early Times Report

Rajouri, Jan 16: Notwithstanding the tall claims of government about safeguarding the rights of children, and despite ban on child labour , the exploitation of children in Rajouri district continues unabated with hundreds of children toiling hard in hazardous conditions to earn their livelihood.
As per the Child Labour Act of Jammu and Kashmir 1986 puts total ban on engagement of child below the age of 14 years in any hazardous process/occupation. The act provides for regulation of employment of children in non-hazardous process or occupation. The act also provides for rehabilitation of child workers and providing support to the family on account of loss of income. Despite many schemes launched by the Government of India as well as state Government for the welfare of the poor Children, nothing is happening on the ground. A local while talking to Early times said that hundreds of children could be seen working at different shops and other work places but authorities concerned have failed to take a step in this regard. He added that the reason behind the menace in district is poverty and illiteracy in rural and far flung corners of the district Rajouri. "Poor parents have no other option but to send their children to work," he said.
