MVD, Students Welfare Deptt JU organize symposium on impact of amended MVD Act

JAMMU, Jan 16: The Motor Vehicles Department, Jammu in coordination with Students Welfare Department, University of Jammu organized a symposium on topic "Impact of recent amendments of 2019 in Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 in curbing traffic violations and minimizing road accidents in J&K", in connection with series of activities being undertaken during the 31st National Road Safety Week.
The symposium was attended by students of Department of Law, Law School of Jammu University and different city colleges.
Transport Commissioner, Dr. Owais Ahmed, was the chief guest while Dean Students Welfare, University of Jammu, Dr. Jasbir Singh, was the guest of honor on the occasion.
Former Head of Department, Department of Law and former J&K State Information Commissioner, Professor S.K. Sharma and Prof. Yudhivr Singh, Department of Geology, University of Jammu were the judges on the occasion.
Dr. Owais Ahmed, while speaking on the occasion, stressed on the need for strict adherence to road safety to avoid road accidents and save precious human lives. He said that the Department is contemplating to establish Institute of Drivers Training and Research (IDTR) and Inspection and Certification Centre, (ICC) for conducting mechanical fitness of vehicles.
Dr. Owais Ahmed also interacted with the students and the participants and responded to their queries.
Regional Transport Officer, Jammu, Dhananter Singh, impressed upon the participants to abide by traffic rules.
Earlier, students spoke on the occasion highlighting the importance of recent amendments made during 2019 in the Central Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 and its impact on traffic violators. They informed that adoption of road safety measures such as wearing seat belt, helmets, avoiding use of mobile phones while driving etc. has increased as a result of the recent amendments in the Act.
During the symposium, Shikha Jamwal was adjudged as 1st , Ratul Dhiman, Law School, Jammu University as 2nd and the 3rd position was shared by Sonali Sharma of Law School, Jammu University and Hivreen Kour of Women College, Parade, Jammu.
Among others present were Additional Transport Commissioner, Raman Kesar, Additional Secretary, Road Safety Council, R K Bhat, Gurmukh Singh, Joint Transport Commissioner, Shri Ravi Raina, Additional Secretary (T), Road Safety Council, S. Swarn Singh, ATC, ARTOs, MVIs and staff of Motor Vehicles Department, Jammu were also present on the occasion.
