Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 16: Authorities have issued fresh avalanche warning in higher reaches following heavy to very heavy snowfall in Kashmir valley, where six soldiers and five civilians were killed during the past 72 hours.
About 100 houses and other structures were damaged due to snowfall during the period in the valley, where a number of Water Supply Schemes (WSS) were also badly affected.
Officials said that in view of the heavy to very heavy snowfall, divisional authorities have issued a fresh avalanche warning in the valley during the next 24 hours.
People living in avalanche prone areas have been requested to restrict their movement in these areas to avoid any accident. However, in case of emergency extra precaution should be taken, they said, adding people should also contact local administration for any help.
Meanwhile, during the past 24 hours over 30 houses and other structures were damaged in snow avalanches, official sources said on Thursday.
In Golan in border town of Uri in north Kashmir district of Baramulla, over 20 houses were damaged due to snow. However, inmates escaped unhurt, they said.
About ten houses and other structures were damaged elsewhere in the valley during the past 24 hours.
Meanwhile, efforts are going on to remove huge snow avalanche which had blocked water in Check Nallah, badly affecting water supply to Krishan Ganga project in border town if Gurez in Bandipora district . “We have stopped all water supply to the power project and efforts are being made to remove the avalanche,” they said.
Work is going on war footing to restore WSS which were affected due to heavy snowfall and avalanche in south Kashmir district of Shopian and Badgam, badly hitting water supply to dozens of villages.
However, they said Public Health Engineering (PHC) has pressed into service workforce and eight of them were partially restored, adding many WSS have been restored.
