‘Bhanwarya Kaleet’ digs into struggle for identity in Rajasthani ‘Mirasi’ culture | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 9: Based on the traditional Rajasthani culture, rituals and community struggles, Sikandar Khan’s ‘Bhanwayra Kaleet’ marked the 9th production in the ongoing Nutan International Theatre Festival -2020 porganised by laksya-The Aim and Nutan Prayas Manch. The play written and directed by Sikander Khan for Kalander Theatre Group Rajasthan brought to fore the strong underlying current for survival of a tribal community vying to express its recognition in the mainstream social and economical set-up. It is a story picked up from ‘Mirasi’ culture in Rajasthan backdrop that is dying the unnatural death. The writers has woven a pathetic lineage of the community and beautifully depicted their sorrows and pains where education is of very low quality which has led their backwardness and the absence of facilities and rights provided by the government. How two brothers known as Dodhi and Doom take up the struggle in most adverse living conditions was the gist of story which was beautifully depicted on stage by a group of performers. Despite all hardships in their lives , how these people are still associated with their roots and do not want to be separated from it even if it is a matter of right or wrong, even being ignored by the society, these people keep their ritual and traditions alive. Talking to the media the writer Sikandar Khan said motivation to script this play was born out of his own roots in the community. “I am a Mirasi Muslim who disowned my own identity out of remorse and in hope for better life. However one day, overcome by a strong sense of betrayal, I let go of my arrogant dissociation from my own people, my community, my roots and my rituals and decided to dig deep and study the ancestry of my community,” said Sikandar . The genealogical investigation left him impressed with richness of heritage and at the same time morbid due to the sense being of able to do nothing for community’s rehabilitation. “Thus, was born the desire to write a play and weave the beauty & complexities of the lives of Mirasi people in the contemporary India,” said Khan.
