AAP in, BJP out ? | | | Exit polls predicting a victory for the AamAadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi assembly elections could prove to be yet another setback for the Bharatiya Janata Party, which won the 2019 parliamentary elections in the country with a thumping majority. In Delhi BJP had won seven Lok Sabha seats and its leaders were confident of sweeping the Assembly polls in the National Capital this time around. If the exit poll results match with the original results on February 11, when the counting of votes will take place in Delhi it would mean that former Chief Minister of the National Capital, Arvind Kejriwal, would get another term. When the AAP launched its election campaign in Delhi, Kejriwal told the voters that if they feel he had done any work for them then they should vote for him and if they feel that he didn't deliver then they should reject him. The pollsters are claiming that Kejriwal's magic has worked and his party will get enough seats to form the government. However, the BJP leaders in New Delhi have rejected results of exit polls and are claiming that their party will get more than 40 seats and would form the new government. It seems people of Delhi have voted for development and they have made it clear that local elections and general elections are different ball games. After winning 300 plus seats in the Lok Sabha polls in 2019, many people across the country were expecting that BJP will sweep all the forthcoming assembly elections. But it has not happened. During the past few months, BJP has only been able to form the government in Haryana that too after getting support from Dushyant Chautala. The BJP couldn't form the government in Maharashtra and Jharkhand and now Delhi also seems to be slipping out of its hands. If AAP manages to return to power, it would once again prove it beyond doubt that people in general elections only vote for one leader i.e. Narendra Modi and when it comes to polls in States the equation changes. Soon after the poll bugle was sounded in New Delhi the question which was posed by the people was, who is the BJP's chief ministerial candidate? The saffron party couldn't even name a single leader and the entire election campaign was run by the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah. If BJP has to win the elections in the States then it will have to learn to highlight local issues as it has been proven beyond doubt that national issues don't work in the assembly polls. |
