Restore high speed internet in Jammu
3/16/2020 11:49:42 PM

In the times of COVID-19 people are trying their best to remain updated about the information which is available on the internet about this deadly virus, which has claimed thousands of lives across the globe.
However, the low speed internet in Jammu and Kashmir is not allowing people to access the information freely. Voices to restore high speed internet in J&K are becoming shriller. The internet services in J&K were barred on August 5, 2019, when the Government of India decided to abrogate J&K’s special status and divided it into two Union Territories.
In Jammu region fixed line connectivity was allowed but mobile internet remained suspended for more than six months. One could understand the reason behind suspension of internet services in Kashmir but no valid reason was given for the barring these services in Jammu, which has by and large remained peaceful during the past seven months.
The 2G services were restored in Kashmir just few days after these were made functional in Jammu region. The ban on social media continued in Jammu till it was applicable in Kashmir. The government has treated Jammu and Kashmir regions at par vis-à-vis internet ban and its restoration in the newly carved out Union Territory. At this crucial juncture when people are desperate to know about the COVID-19 and how can it be contained the authorities seem in no mood o reconsider the decision about allowing people to access the high speed internet. One fails to understand why nationalist people of Jammu are being denied the 4G internet services even when the COVID-19 threat is knocking at our door.
People of Jammu have always stood with the nation and the security forces in fighting the scourge of terrorism. It’s unjustified to keep them deprived of the information which they need to access in this hour of need.
Jammu and Kashmir administration has valid reasons to provide low speed internet to Kashmir due to the threat of terrorists and their supporters but in Jammu there is no such eminent threat. Helmsmen need to give a thought to restoring the 4G internet services in Jammu region to drive home a point that government is concerned about the people and wants to keep them well equipped to know everything about the COVID-19 threat. Ball is in the court of the government and it has to act to allow people to remain abreast about the rapid pace developments taking place across the globe.
