Post COVID-19 lockdown power consumption in J&K reduced by 283 MW
4/10/2020 9:51:46 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, April 4: Owing to the closure of lockdown in the backdrop of Cronavirus in Jammu and Kashmir, the power usage is reduced by 283 MW in the Union Territory. Moreover, the Industrialists alleged that Jammu and Kashmir government has failed to take any measure to provide relief to them.
"Post lockdown March 24, the power usage in Jammu and Kashmir was reduced by 283 MW as compared to the earlier situation," an official associated with Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Department (PDD) told .
He informed The Dispatch "Out of 283 MW power demand reduced in J&K post lockdown, the 180 MW was reduced in Jammu region while 103 MW was reduced in Kashmir region,"
"Sometimes before lockdown, we were supplying 2150 MW to both regions of Union Territory to meet the average power demand but in the month of March, immediately after the implementation of the lockdown the power demand reduced to 1867 MW," he added.
Giving region wise breakup, he said "We were supplying 1300 MW to Kashmir region before the restrictions to meet the power demand. In the month of March, especially post lockdown, we are supplying 1197 MW to meet the fresh power demand," he added.
Similarly, he informed in Jammu region the PDD department was supplying 850 MW before lockdown to meet the power demand which is reduced to 650 MW post lockdown.
"The power demand is reduced post lockdown because many manufacturing units are closed in Jammu and Kashmir but the government has adopted a casual attitude toward its customers. The casual attitude of the government can be gauged from fact the government has not even extended the bill payment dates instead asked costumers to submit online," an said.
"We have taken up the issue with the government. We urged the government to extend the date for the payment of power bill for the month of Feb 2020 and exempt the Industrial Units from the payment of minimum charges and fixed demand charges for the closed units as well as to the units working with a minimum capacity," an another Industrial said.
