Formulate proper action plan to provide basic amenities in Chatha: Munish tells admin
Residents demand provision of better sanitation-drainage, carpeted roads

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Apr 13: Editor, Early Times, Munish Gupta, on Monday while slamming the authorities for the appalling condition of civic amenities in Chatha area said that it is unfortunate that the locality and its residents have been ignored all these years due to which the locals are deprived of elementary facilities of life even today.
“The area is still without the basic amenities of life. These amenities are important for people to survive. It is sad that no one has paid any attention towards the issues which touch the lives of a common man,” said Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency.
“The miserable condition of Peer Baba Morh locality in Chatha depicts a sordid tale of constant neglect and lack of proper development. It exposes the weaknesses of the official machinery which has not able to provide necessities needed for a sustainable life to the residents. It is really disappointing to see that a common man is suffering in absence of basic civic amenities,” he added.
Munish urged the authorities to formulate proper action plan so as to provide basic civic amenities to the people of Chatha area without any hindrance.
Meanwhile, the residents of Peer Baba Morh, Chatha while talking to Early Times raised their concern over damaged roads, poor sanitation, clogged drains and garbage dumping in open spaces.
Several residents said that heaps of unattended garbage in the locality is left on the streets especially along drains and open spaces adding that they are fed up with the accumulation of garbage, causing improper sanitation and the stench in the streets.
Claiming that the filth has been piling up for a while, several locals said that sanitary workers do not lift the garbage regularly.
“The interior roads in the locality have become permanent spot to dump garbage as the trash collected there is not cleared frequently, leading people to dump more waste here. The added littering has become a concern for the residents of the area,” said Vinod Kumar, a local.
“Sanitary staffers should regularly pick the litter as the road is turning into an open garbage dump. Even random food vendors trash their waste at various locations. Such indiscriminate dumping poses a health hazard to the locals. There is a need to penalize the culprits for littering,” insisted Vinod.
A few residents said that most of the drains in their locality are choked due to accumulation of mud and garbage. “Stagnated drains and poor sanitation are two major problems which irked the residents. In order to decongest the clogged drains, desilting should be taken up on priority. We urge the authorities to take measures immediately to clean up existing drainage system in the locality and ensure that the drainage water flows up to the out-charge point,” they said.
Several residents while raising the issue of non-provision of street lights said that majority of the portions in our locality are reeling under darkness due to lack of illumination in lanes.
“The situation worsens in winters as the sun sets early. Many areas do not have any provision of street light while most of them are non-functional in areas where they were installed,” the residents said.
The residents also alleged that the darkness due to lack of street lights in the locality makes it easy for illegal dumping of garbage and untreated sewage.
Another problem the residents complain of is the poor maintenance of the roads in their area. “Due to poor condition of roads, people are getting lot of troubles in commuting. Most of the roads are in deplorable condition as they have developed pot-holes and just resemble as dust bowls. The pitiable condition of the roads has robbed the sheen of the locality as it presents a gloomy picture,” said Sanjay Kumar.
