Early Times Report
jammu, Apr 13: As the government hospitals in Jammu region are busy handling the cases of COVID-19 patients and suspects, private hospitals have literally become defunct.
At present the focus of the administration is on preventing the spread of COVID-19 in the union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Everyone is aware of the fact that if this deadly virus spreads it can wreak havoc. J&K has been under lockdown for more than 20-days and there are indications that this lockdown may be extended for a few more weeks.
"Many private hospitals in Jammu city have pulled down their shutters since the lockdown commenced. This has left the patients suffering with other serious ailments in a lurch. They have nowhere to go. The government hospitals are busy fighting COVID-19 and private hospitals are closed," an analyst told Early Times.
He said, "The government should facilitate the functioning of the private hospitals and nursing homes in Jammu. It can help in defusing the crisis to some extent and the people suffering with other ailments can visit these institutions."
An owner of a private hospital, who wished not to be named said, "We have been unable to carry out our operations since the lockdown commenced. Our staff is unable to reach the hospital and if somehow patients do manage to reach us they have to return disappointed as we don't have manpower to treat them."
He said that the government needs to facilitate the functioning of the private hospitals in these crisis times. "It will reduce the burden on the government run hospitals and the patients, who need to get the dialysis and other procedures can get some respite. People at the helm should devise some plan to throw open the private healthcare institutions in Jammu," he added.
An observer said, "In the countries worst hit by the COVID-19 private hospitals and nursing homes have played a pivotal role in supporting the government's healthcare system. In Jammu also these private institutions can play a major role."
He said, "To begin with the government should identify the private hospitals in Jammu which can be thrown open for the patients suffering from ailments other than COVID-19 and their staff members should be given the curfew passes so that they can reach the hospital. This sector cannot be ignored in these testing times."
