Private hospitals need to step in
4/28/2020 11:47:19 PM
Patients, who have not been infected by the COVID-19, are suffering as they are not getting healthcare for other problems. Most of the government hospitals are busy battling the pandemic.
Although the J&K administration has ordered the reopening of the private hospitals but still these health institutions have not become functional fully.
There have been many instances of patients not seeking medical attention even for emergencies. Many people are dying at home and some of them have treatable condition.
Besides pandemic the medicos have to ensure that other patients don’t suffer and they get the treatment they require. Emergency cases cannot be ignored as such patients require immediate attention. If these cases are ignored number of people dying of ailments other than COVID-19 can shoot up.
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has already hinted that lockdown will continue in Red Zones only and in other areas which are COVID-19 free restrictions will be lifted. Lieutenant Governor of J&K UT, Girish Chander Murmu, has also asked the officials to make preparations in advance for the post May 3 scenario.
One of the most important tasks which needs to be accomplished is to provide the requisite treatment to the patients, who are suffering from cancer, diabetes and other ailments. They can’t be left to fend for themselves. They need to be taken care off.
There are many patients who would be needing immediate surgeries. If these patients cannot be treated in the government hospitals, doors of private hospitals should be thrown open for them.
In the first phase of the lockdown, private hospitals were unable to function due to the staff not being able to reach but in the second phase of the lockdown restrictions were eased for the employees of private hospitals in J&K.
The private hospitals can play an important role at this juncture. These institutions can reduce the burden on the government hospitals by treating other critically ill patients at affordable rates.
The main purpose of the two phases of the lockdown was to save the lives of common people. This purpose can get defeated if we allow people to die of ailments other than COVID-19.
One can understand that doctors at this point of time are over burdened and they are fighting a war against the deadly virus without any medicines or vaccines. They need our support but the patients who require immediate treatment also need everyone’s support.
