Politicians play vote bank politics amid COVID-19 outbreak
‘Distribute ration in their own constituencies; spend money accumulated through corruption to woo voters’
4/28/2020 11:54:19 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 28: In the disguise of helping poor during COVID-19 restrictions, the politicians of different political parties have been openly flaunting their efforts of distributing necessary items but this gesture is found confined to the poor of their own constituencies, exposing their hidden agenda of solidifying vote bank for upcoming elections.
Moreover, a moot question remains as from where these politicians have been managing money to fund such activities as it is almost impossible to utilize their pensions or the savings of their salary. Maximum possibilities are the money collected by these politicians as part of their corrupt practices, which has been utilized among some selected poor.
Since the lockdown in view of COVID-19 restrictions, some politicians have been distributing ration and other eatables among the poor, in media managed events, which are sometimes telecast on electronic media channels or the events made their way to the other media channels or on the social media platforms, which is otherwise banned by the government across the state. One peculiar characteristic of these distribution events is that the politicians have been distributing items as per well drafted strategy, in which a clear distinction is made between the poor. “Only the poor of their constituency, who are potential voters have been given the ration and same is given media coverage on media platforms as well as on the Whatsapp groups maintained by the cyber-activists of the politicians, who have been making every effort to show that the politician as most generous, public friendly etc”, a senior citizen said, adding that a question arises why these politicians forgot these poor, during the routine days.
He further said such staged activities of politicians were nothing more than image-building exercises among the gullible masses to secure votes and project themselves as generous men.
Another person questioned the sources of the money required for doing such activities. “The pension of these politicians is in thousands, while as if a politician is honest, then he would have saved few Lakhs from his salary as a legislator. But such activities require huge funds in several Lakhs and these politicians are spending it, which points towards the fact that they had accumulated huge money by corruption and now they have been distributing the same amount of corruption among the public”, a politician said, adding that a honest politician could not manage such a huge amount of money to fund such activities.
He further said that it was the responsibility of the public representatives to extend helping hand to the public during the time of crisis but these politicians were found more concerned about their image building so that they would gather maximum votes in the upcoming elections, rather than actually intend to help the needy people.
Though helping public during the time of crisis is a noble gesture but spending money, collected through corrupt practices is apparently an unethical practice. “The government should initiate enquires as from where these politicians have been managing huge funds. The bank details of these politicians should be scrutinized and made public so that transparency is maintained as whether the money spend on these campaigns is honestly earned money or through corrupt measures”, the politician said.
