Early Times Report

UDHAMPUR, Apr 29: The ongoing lockdown period has taken a huge toll of the profession of beekeeping in Udhampur district as the beekeepers are facing several problems in rearing the bees.
Beekeepers are not able to relocate the bee boxes to other locations when the temperature increases.
“The boxes have to be shifted under the shade when the temperature rises otherwise the bees will die from the heat but it is almost impossible these days as we didn’t get the labour to relocate the boxes,” said Omkar Singh, a beekeeper from Sudh Mahadev.
Singh, who presently has kept about 200 boxes in Jaganoo area, earns his livelihood from bee keeping but due to lockdown, his income may get a severe beating.
“Due to the lockdown restrictions, I am unable to go to market to buy some stuff urgently needed for the beekeeping.
Our crop is ready but we are unable to remove it from boxes. If this lockdown continues for some more time then how can we earn our livelihood,” he said.
Singh said, “We do not have any curfew pass and no one comes here to take care of us.
We demand that we should be given curfew pass so that we can make honey out of our crop and sell it in the market to earn livelihood for our families.”
