Excise Deptt conducts raids; 2530 litres of Lahan destroyed, one arrested

JAMMU, May 5: In view of the complaints of illicit distillation due to closure of wine shops, the Excise Department has tightened noose against the violators and booked them under the Excise Act. Different teams have been constituted for keeping a check.
In Rajouri-Poonch Excise Range, a raid was conducted at village Muradpur. During the course of raid, one person namely Anil Kumar S/o Bodh Raj was arrested under section 48 of J&K Excise Act for possession of 2 bottles of illicit liquor and about 30 liters of illicit Lahan recovered and destroyed on the spot.
Another raid was conducted by Excise Range Kathua at Kangdyal, Dhabwal & Upper Sakthachak, Persochak, Banyari, Labdhuchak, Sunjwan & Chibbachak areas of Kathua District to arrest the menace of illicit distillation of liquor. Here, 2500 Kgs of Lahan, raw material of illicit liquor was recovered and destroyed on spot. It is pertinent to mention that the illicit liquor is very injurious to health but still certain people indulge into the malpractice of making illicit liquor.
The Department has got the input that there has been escalated in the process of distillation of illicit liquor.
Those who participated in the day long operations included Virender Pawar ETO Excise Range Rajouri-Poonch, Virender Kumar ETO Excise Range Kathua, along with Inspectors Arun Kumar, Razi Ahmed, Mohd Pervaiz, Sub-Inspectors Anil Sharma, Karamat Ali, Amit Sharma, Excise Guards Jyoti Prakash Sharma and Barun Sharma.
As per Excise Commissioner Rajesh Kumar Shavan, a comprehensive methodology is being worked out by the department to plug all illegal distillation and smuggling of the Liquor and Drugs. He said that even the department is verifying the stocks of wine shops to check any type of malpractice. In this process around 60 shops have so far been verified and re-sealed adding that in certain shops the tempering with CCTV footage has been noticed and accordingly another central team has been constituted.
