Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, May 19: Two militants including the son of separatist leader and Chairman, Tehreek-I-Hurriyat, Mohammad Ashraf Khan Sehrai were killed in an encounter with police and security forces at Kani Mazar, Nawa Kadal here today.
Reports said that Jammu & Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) laid a cordon in the Kani Mazar area during the preceding night after receiving inputs that some militants are hiding there. As the joint party of police and CRPF were carrying out the operation they were fired upon.
Following this a gun-battle ensued between the two sides and the same culminated with the killing of two militants owing allegiance to Hizbul Muhajideen.
In the gun battle three CRPF personnel and a policeman were also injured. They were shifted to the 92 Base Hospital here where they are recovering.
The slain militants have been identified as Junaid Ashraf Sehrai and Tariq Ahmad Sheikh. Junaid was the son of Tehreek-I-Hurriyat Chairman Mohammad Ashraf Khan Sehrai. Junaid, an MBA had joined the militancy in 2018 and rose to the rank of Divisional Commander for Hizbul Mujahideen.
Sehrai is basically a resident of Kupwara, but right now the family is putting up in the Baghat area of Srinagar district. His associate Tariq is a resident of Pulwama in South Kashmir. Junaid’s killing is the second blow to HM during this month.
Earlier, this month the operational chief of the outfit Reyaz Naikoo was killed in an encounter at Beighpora in Pulwama.
There are reports that some houses suffered damages in the encounter and the locals as well as personnel of Fire & Emergency Services department doused the flames after many hours. Some of the people also got trapped as the firing was going on. These people were evacuated to safer places by the police personnel.
Director General of J&K Police Dilbagh Singh said that Junaid and Tariq were tasked to lure youth into militancy and for grenade throwing. “Sehrai would hold meetings with the youth and lure them towards militancy,” he said. His associate Tariq was active in Pulwama and Shopian districts.
The DGP said that Nawa Kadal operation was a clean one as only one residential house caught fire which was controlled immediately.
“The first thing we did in the morning was to evacuate the inmates. In that process, two forces personnel—one from CRPF and another from J&KP’s SOG were injured. In the final assault, the remaining militant hurled a grenade in which two CRPF men sustained injured but all the injured are stable,” he said.
