Early Times Report

Jammu, July 25: Congress party has once again sent out a feeler that it has moved beyond the rhetoric of Article 370 and it has accepted government’s August 5, 2019 decision.
This is the second time when the party through its senior leader and former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Ghulam Nabi Azad, has declared that it would fight the coming elections and J&K’s statehood should be restored. There has been once again no mention of restoration of pre- August 5 position.
Ghulam Nabi Azad called on Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi on Friday didn’t mention any point related to the abrogation of Article 370. His specific demands were restoration of J&K’s statehood and providing adequate security to the political leaders.
“I demanded that the statehood should be restored immediately and it should be followed by the Assembly election. The development activities can be carried out only if there is an elected government in J&K. Due to the result of prolonged Governor rule, the development activities have come to standstill. So, it is in the interest of the state that the elected government should be put in place,” Azad said.
Azad also raised the issue of downgrading of security of political leaders and demanded enhanced security, vehicles and accommodation to political leaders irrespective of party affiliations.
On March 14, this year, Azad while talking to the media persons along with National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah had pitched for the restoration of Statehood for Jammu and Kashmir and preferred not to raise any issue pertaining to the abrogation of Article 370 and whether the order issued on August 5, last year should be rolled back.
At that point of time also Azad, who has remained J&K Chief Minister from 2005 to 2008, had demanded restoration of J&K’s statehood. He had highlighted how J&K was downgraded into a union territory without any compunction.
