Jammu, Jan 27: In a shocking incident, father of newly born neonate was allegedly asked to pay Rs 2500/ by nursing staff to get custody of his child at District Hospital Kishtwar.
According to the details available with Early Times, the nurses at District Hospital Kishtwar refused to handover the child to the family till they paid Rs 2500/ to them.
The pregnant lady Zahida Begum wife of Irshad Ahmed of Marwah was referred to Kishtwar for delivery from snow bound Marwah area which is presently cut off from the rest of the country.
Irshad paid around Rs 5500 as airfare for shifting his wife in a private chopper to Kishtwar hospital. After paying hefty airfare poor this poor fellow Irshad Ahmed had to face the agony on part of medical staff at District Hospital Kishtwar where he was forced to pay Rs 2500 to take his own child into his own arms. “I was referred from Marwah to District Hospital Kishtwar. We borrowed some money to pay airfare. I was unconscious. After regaining consciousness, I enquired from my husband- he informed me that he had to pay Rs 2500 for getting the custody of our child,” said Zahida Begum. Her husband Irshad Ahmed said that his wife got admitted under MRD No. 9258 on 25-1-2021 and delivered the male child at around 7 PM Tuesday i.e. on the 72nd Republic Day.
People from Marwah also held a peaceful protest against the incident and demanded action against the guilty officials who are looting poor people of Marwah.
Later Dy SP HQ Kishtwar Davinder Singh rushed to the hospital and pacified the agitating people by assuring them action under law.
The family members also submitted a written complaint to the Medical Superintendent District Hospital Kishtwar and also lodged a complaint with Kishtwar police. They demanded action against the culprits involved in denying the child’s custody to parents.
When contacted Medical Superintendent District Hospital Kishtwar Dr Parvaiz Iqbal Wani said that the matter is being looked into and assured action as per law if anyone is found involved as was alleged by the complainant.
It is pertinent to mention that last week a woman from remote Bhunjwah area of the district died after hospital staff refused to remove her dead foetus— Medical Superintendent of the hospital had ordered inquiry into that matter as well— but the outcome of the said inquiry is still not known.
