Gusty winds followed by rain, hailstorm creates havoc in North Kashmir

BARAMULLA, June 11: High velocity winds followed by hailstorm and rain today in the afternoon caused massive damage to orchards, trees and houses in various parts of North Kashmir.
Reports said that dozens of houses, electric transmission lines got damaged while giant trees were uprooted due to strong winds in several areas. They said that rooftops of about a dozen residential houses were damaged due strong winds in many parts of Handwara, Kupwara and Bandipora districts.
It is learnt that the power supply also got affected in these areas as strong winds damaged transmission lines and uprooted electric poles at several places. However no loss of life has been reported so far in these areas.
Dozens of houses, electric transmission lines got damaged while trees were uprooted due to strong winds in several areas after which people panicked. Rooftops of about a dozen houses were damaged due strong winds in many parts of Sopore, Baramulla, Hajin, Handwara, Kreeri, Tappar Pattan and other areas of North Kashmir.
Bashir Ahmad from Pattan area said that power supply got affected in their area as strong winds damaged transmission lines and uprooted electric poles at several places. Few vehicles got partially damaged, he said.
Strong winds also wreaked havoc as orchards and standing crop suffered extensive damage due to gusty winds followed by rains, hailstorms in parts of Baramulla, Sopore, Bandipora and several other areas.
Mohammad Ashraf from Tappar area said that due to massive wind storm two Poplar Trees fell on National Highway among which one fell on Wagon-R bearing registration number JK05C 0519 and damaged it completely, the car was parked on the roadside and nobody was inside it.
Locals said that the roofs of many houses were destroyed in parts of Sopore town while as many trees were also uprooted in the belt. Reports also said that several residential houses were also damaged in other parts of Kashmir after trees uprooted and fell on them. The strong winds created panic and scare while the power supply in many areas was snapped, till the last reports came in.
