Sensex falls 68.62 points

MUMBAI, Feb 23: Extending losses for the sixth straight session on Wednesday, the BSE Sensex declined 68.62 points to settle at 57,232.06 as selling was seen in Auto, Oil and Gas and Energy stocks.
The Nifty of National Stock Exchange (NSE) too slipped 28.95 points to settle at 17,063.25.
Despite high volatility, the equity market ended in the red.
The Sensex opened higher 332 points at 57,632.94. It surged 435 points to 57,733.37, the days high. Later, it tumbled down nearly 191 points to 57,109.24, the days low, before closing at 57,232.06, still 68.62 points less from its previous close.
The sectoral indices like Auto, Oil and Gas and Energy stocks kept the market under pressure on Wednesday.
However, Realty, Utilities and Materials improved.
In scrips, NTPC was a major loser, as it fell 1.40 per cent to Rs 130.20 followed by L& T by 1.29 per cent to Rs 1819.05, Bajaj Finserv by 1.03 per cent to Rs 16,055, Nestle India by 0.93 per cent to Rs 17,923.45 and ICICI Bank by 0.92 per cent to Rs 744.50.
The gainers were Kotak Bank by 2.22 per cent to Rs 1882.75, Titan by 1.81 per cent to Rs 2489.20, IndusInd Bank by 1.04 per cent to Rs 949.10, Maruti Suzuki by 0.80 per cent to Rs 8694.95 and Bajaj finance by 0.53 per cent to Rs 7046.90.
The Sensex registered the days high and low at 57,733.37 and 57,109.24 respectively.
The Nifty recorded the days high and low at 17,220.70 and 17,027.85 respectively.
The Mid Cap rose by 0.60 per cent and Mid Cap by 0.93 per cent.
In 30 scrips, 12 advanced, 17 declined while one remained unchanged.
