Kashmir: Snowfall catches admin napping
People suffer due to lack of coordination among babus
2/24/2022 12:24:34 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 23: Even as heavy snowfall in Kashmir during February is nothing unusual, the administration was yet again caught allegedly napping to tackle the situation while the people on the ground, as also on the social media, were up in arms against the “babu raaj”.
Whereas even the main roads in many of the areas were not cleared even till over afternoon, the power supply had broken down last night. Water supply in some areas remained equally affected.
Taking a dig at the administrative failure, many of the netizens said they have become “victims of babu raaj”.
Sources said most of the snow control rooms were not properly working in Kashmir, as a result of which, the people had to face terrible-inconvenience.
Forget the rural areas, snow wasn’t cleared on the strategic Kani Pora Road that connects Srinagar with Pulwama and Shopian districts till around noon.
The power supply, on the other hand, snapped after few inches of snowfall.
Netizens said “babus were busy with festivities of sorts like promotion of tourism that they forgot the problems being faced by the locals.”
A senior official told the Early Times on the condition of anonymity that the “lack of administrative coordination among various corridors of power in Jammu and Kashmir was the main reason for the administrative breakdown.”
“Actually there are multiple power centers trying to control administration on the ground.
Instead of the experienced hands in the Civil Secretariat, some officials on deputation in JK who have no experience of handling affairs in such a region are calling the shots and this has led to administrative chaos, which was again visible today. Otherwise heavy snowfall in February is nothing unusual,” said the official.
The official said “Ideally the snow control rooms should have been functional round the clock. “
“We never expect the snow to send a prior intimation to the officials about its coming,” said an observer.
A senior official while refuting public complaints said the affected services were being restored on priority. He said such snowfall was not expected in February.
