Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 23: Govt. Degree College, Chenani UNDER its NSS Unit, PRAYATNA, Anti-Cyber Crime Wing, IQAC, and Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav organized a webinar ON PREVENTION OF CYBER CRIME: IDENTITY THEFT on 23/02/2022 at 12:00 PM to celebrate the Initiative of Ministry of Home Affairs as part of implementing a scheme under Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). Delivering the welcome address, Wahid Farooq, Lecturer, Dept. of Computer Sciences, GDC Chenani welcomed the Principal of the College, Dr. Pragya Khanna, Staff members and students. He set the context for the webinar, stressing on the need for Cyber Crime: Identity Theft Awareness with the increased dependence on IT post pandemic and steps we should take to secure the personal information. He gave a detailed Powerpoint presentation on Identity theft involving credit cards, bank accounts, business or personal loans, government benefits or other types of transactions and exhorted that each of us can and should take common-sense steps such as making sure to keep Social Security numbers confidential, and being careful to limit use of birth dates and other personal information in online communications including social media. An identity thief needs any combination of your Social Security number, birth date, address, and phone number. This makes it possible to create a fake driver's license and then pose as you in order to apply for credit. The identity thief might put in a change of address with a credit card company so you will not know that someone else is running up charges. Once an identity thief opens one account, opening a second and a third is easier. Arun Kumar Student of B.A Semester-3rd discussed the consequences of financial crimes, including economic consequences, social and reputational damage, and psychological and health harms. Ms. Neha Devi, Student of Semester- 1st pointed out common services available like hotlines for prevention and outreach to high risk populations, identity restoration assistance, identity theft insurance, and credit and identity monitoring. She also discussed areas where practice can grow, such as addressing the emotional harms and trauma of fraud and identity theft. Principal of the College, Dr. Pragya Khanna appreciated the efforts of the staff and students for the organization of the event. The webinar session ended with a Vote of thanks presented by Lakshya Kumar. |
