Early Times Report

Srinagar, Feb 24: With improvement in weather conditions in the Kashmir Valley, flight operations resumed from the Srinagar International airport while traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway was also restored partially on Thursday.
A number of flights which were delayed in the morning were rescheduled and they took off to their respective destinations. Earlier eight flights were cancelled amid poor visibility at the airport. On Wednesday, all flights were cancelled due to the snow and poor visibility.
Heavy snowfall was experienced on Wednesday disrupting air, rail and surface traffic besides normal life all across the Kashmir valley.
The Meteorological Department has forecast possible light to moderate rain or snow showers at a few places in Jammu and Kashmir in the next 24 hours.
There is no forecast of any major snowfall till the end of February.
The Srinagar-Jammu National highway was put through partially for vehicular traffic following clearance of accumulated snowfall and landslides triggered due to the rain and snow were removed at various places.
A traffic official said NH-44 from Udhampur to Banihal except for some stretches where only one way movement is possible.
All the stranded Kashmir-bound trucks have crossed the Navayug tunnel, the official said.
Meanwhile, Srinagar- Baramulla rail chugged on the track in the morning as scheduled after remaining suspended yesterday following the heavy snowfall. However, Srinagar Banihal rail was resumed this afternoon, a railway official told UNI.
Many far flung areas including Kupwara-Keran, Karnah, Machhil and Bandipora-Gurez roads remained closed due to accumulation of snowfall. The snow clearance operation could not be taken up due to obsolete weather conditions.
Srinagar Municipal Corporation has pressed into service men and machines to clear snow from interior roads and by-lanes of Srinagar. Many Srinagar roads were waterlogged due to heavy snowfall.
Power supply to most areas in the Kashmir valley including Srinagar were restored after the transmission lines and poles were damaged due to snowfall.
Most areas of Srinagar were without electricity since Wednesday morning amid snowfall and cold conditions.
Power Distribution Corp Ltd’s Aijaz Ahmad Dar said at least 60 per cent damage occurred across Kashmir due to snowfall.
